Information Architecture - Exercise

Comparing Print and Digital Information Architecture

Objective: Apply your understanding of information architecture by comparing how the same type of content is organized in a printed publication versus a modern digital news platform.

Exercise scoring

This exercise is not scored. It is designed to help you reflect on how content structure, navigation, search, and layout differ across media.

Instructions

Imagine that the same Sunday news edition is available in two formats:

  1. a printed newspaper you are holding in your hands
  2. the newspaper’s website or mobile news app

You want to find a story about a major international sporting event that has recently become a breaking news topic.

In your response, describe some of the differences in information architecture between the printed and digital versions.

You may wish to consider questions such as:

  • How would you locate the story in the printed version?
  • How would you locate the story in the digital version?
  • What role do navigation menus, categories, search, headlines, links, and recommendations play online?
  • How does the digital version support faster discovery and movement between related stories?

Type your response below, then click Submit to view the suggested answer.

Focus on structure, navigation, and how users discover information in each format.
